SUGAR BLACK ROSE THE IBERIAN CHAMPION

                 Sugar Black Rose

Sugar Black Rose is robust, resistant with short internodal intervals. Tastes like pawpaw, mango and other tropical fruits, the plant has abundant lateral branches and THC levels as high as 25%. The best results are with a phenotype that no longer resembles either of its parents as it has evolved. This new phenotype produces a lot of resin and tends to turn blackish towards the end of the flowering cycle in cold climates or when it has been well grown. The plant grows vigorously; in a trial when the seed was planted in a pot outside on the 7th July, it was 2.5m high by the 1st September. If well fed, it will consume everything it’s given and can produce great yields. Its high resin levels and fat trichomes make delicious extracts. The names Sugar Black Rose® and SBR® are both registered by Delicious Seeds.

*BREEDING*

SBR is a cross between two of the best known genetics in Spain; Critical Bilbo and Black Domina Barraquera. In this instance Black Domina is the mother and, unusually given its low pollen production, Critical Bilbo was used as the male whereas it’s normally used as the female. Over the years, the Delicious Seeds Team has made a massive effort to preserve its mother plants in the best possible conditions to avoid genetic corruption among their parent plants. SBR produces very characteristic oval, elliptical seeds. This is because the buds are very dense, forcing the seed to grow flat. Although it’s difficult to obtain many seeds when the buds are so tight, Delicious Seeds have developed a system to bridge seed plants to the extent that you can even see how they emerge from among the buds.

*SUGAR BLACK ROSE® AUTO*
The autoflowering version was developed over a two year period during which a huge number of crosses were carried out. The project started by creating versions of Critical Auto and Black Domina Auto by crossing elite clones with Northern Lights Auto. From the first generation of each version phenotypes that best represented Critical Bilbo and Black Domina Barranquera were chosen and re-crossed within each version to produce the first autos. Those that best represented their parents were then chosen to make another cross resulting in the definitive Critical Bilbo Auto and Black Domina Barranquera which were subsequently crossed to create Sugar Black Rose®Auto. Although the process was now complete, a further cross was done to stabilise the SBR® characteristics and to clean out any remnants of Northern Lights Auto from the genetic pool. When we got to generation F5, it went on sale. Further down the road, at the F7 stage, the F5 version was used again to reduce the size. If not, the strain would have evolved down the Sativa path with ever bigger yields but a longer flowering cycle. As the autos used are all grown from seed rather than from clones, homogeneity caneasily be lost. In order to produce the most stable product possible, Delicious Seeds use as few males as they can; a maximum of around three per batch. Furthermore, the seeds from each plant are bagged and labelled with the characteristics of each. When packaging, the seeds for each pack come from the same bag so that they all come from the same plant. The result of all this work is a high yielding plant, both in terms of grammes produced and resin. With THC levels of between 16% to 18%, the effect is very relaxing. The plant itself is very similar to the original Sugar Black Rose®; medium-sized, around 80cm tall though well-branched, which accounts for its generous yields with a prominent, yet discreet, central cola. Its sweet taste is also reminiscent of the original. Ready in 75 days.

*SUGAR BLACK ROSE® EARLY VERSION*
The auto gene comes from a Northen Lights Auto, lending Sugar Black Rose® a touch of real auto quality as the Northern Lights Auto has a solid structure, a good size and intense resin production.  Furthermore, Northern Lights is one of the parents of Black Domina, adding genes from a family relation to the hybrid. This is the cross sold as Sugar Black Rose® Early Version, which is a fast version of the feminised rather than the autoflowering strain.

*DEEP MANDARIN*
To develop the CBD version Sugar Black Rose® was crossed with Dieseltonic, which is a phenotype of Dancehall by Reggae Seeds selected by Resin Seeds. Apart from CBD, Dieseltonic also adds the intense mandarin taste that characterises some Diesel varieties. Given its mandarin taste, the Delicious Seeds Team decided not to call it Sugar Black Rose CBD as they felt this would mislead buyers as it is really a descendant of Sugar Black Rose® with a different taste compared to the original hybrid. And so, they decided to give it its own personality as it’s actually a different strain. Before putting it on sale, they conducted a trial whereby they grew 200 plants and analysed ten of them. All ten had higher levels of CBD than THC so they did the trial again, got the same results and released the product for sale. This version produces CBD rich plants with CBD:THC ratios varying from 1:1, 2:1 to 3:1, allowing each grower to choose the proportion of cannabinoids they prefer.

*CANNABIS CUPS *
Delicious Seeds started entering cannabis cup competitions in 2010 since when Sugar Black Rose® has made an explosive impact, managing to become Spain’s greatest cup winner. Unsurprising really given that Sugar Black Rose® combines Iberia’s two most elite clones: Critical Bilbo and Black Domina Barraquera. To date, Sugar Black Rose® has won 26 cannabis cups in less than six years. The Delicious Seeds Team are sure that it’s actually won more cups than this some of which they’re unaware of as some growers change the names of the strains they present, especially in the extracts category where they tend to give them imaginary names. The Sugar Black Rose® that won most cups was grown outdoors in Teruel at 1,200m in good soil, lots of sun, organic feed and pure air, all of which intensify resin production and taste. The clone was selected by Jordi, one of the longest serving members of the Delicious Seeds Team. Notwithstanding, you don’t need to grow an elite clone to get good results from Sugar Black Rose®; independent analyses carried out in U.S. dispensaries have detected levels as high as 25% THC in some specimens tested. Many of the cups have been in the extracts category as the huge amount of thick resin glands produce excellent results both for solvent based as well as non-solvent based extractions.

*U.S.A.*
After researching the subject on the internet, Rubén already knew that Sugar Black Rose® was on sale in various dispensaries in the U.S.A.. This summer he decided to visit and see for himself. There he found SBR® grown in a variety of systems as well as various types of extract. According to the information he was able to glean, it appears that the first to grow this strain were the guys from Emerald City Patients in Seattle followed by Washington, then Portland before finally arriving in Denver from where it spread to other states across America. When he tried to explain that he was the creator of Sugar Black Rose®, some refused to believe it and ignored him while others came straight out from behind the shop counter to give him a hug. In some dispensaries they were unaware that feminised seeds existed and were amazed to learn that Sugar Black Rose® is available in 4 versions; feminised, early, autoflowering and CBD rich. The best reception he received was withoubt doubt in the dispensaries of Portland. Near there, in Beaverton, he found an exquisite SBR® that had been grown organically. The best extracts were found in Seattle; one was a type of live resin made with CO2 that was clear and transparent though he also came across crumble, which is what Americans call moonrock. The best looking was the live resin while the crumble had a much better taste. At the dispensary where he found it, they explained that with SugarBlack Rose® they could get yields of up to 20% with THC levels of up to 85%.

The quality of the samples found depended a lot on where they were from. In Oregón, for example, they were all grown organically and very tasty while in Denver most were grown commercially using mineral fertilisers yet the essential essence of SBR® still managed to shine through. As Rubén explained to us: “A lot depends on the legal structure in each state. For this reason, I prefer the horizontal model whereby everyone can do everything so a company that opts for quality can control the whole production process as opposed to a vertical model whereby a company can only do one thing, leading to thousands of parallel companies.” Although the purpose of the trip was to see where Sugar Black Rose® is being used, what Rubén found out was that his most famous strain in the U.S.A. is actually Cotton Candy, but more on this in our next article.
